What is Occupy
Occupy HCC is focused on the economic injustices that students and faculty at Holyoke Community College face, as well as those issues that we face in the communities that we live in. The Occupy movement at large does not focus their action on just economic issues facing higher education and we hope as OccupyHCC to build on that and work with other Occupy groups.
Occupy Wall Street and the groups that have come together as a result of the Occupy Wall Street movement are addressing a broad scope of injustices perpetrated against United States citizens and the world at large.
Due to enormity of the issue it is hard to give main stream media the sound bites they want to describe the movement. If we truly are interested in understanding what the protests have been about then we must all continually educate ourselves about the problems that plague our economic and political system. Occupy HCC will try to summarize these issues below, but encourage you to look at the further reading and check out the resources we provide so you are not just taking our word on the issues. In addition to our overview of the Occupy movement we include some direct quotes from Occupy groups who have taken the time to clearly state why they feel the need to resist the current economic system. Thank you for stopping by our page and please join us at our General Assembly.

Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered direct action movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District. OWS is part of a growing international movement fighting against neoliberal economic practices, the crimes of Wall Street, government controlled by monied interests, and the resulting income inequality, unemployment, environmental destruction, and oppression of people at the front lines of the economic crisis.*
